MTV Presents Emeli Sandé at KOKO Camden

Arriving at KOKO on a cold Wednesday evening thinking that I was just “fashionably late” enough to go straight into the venue as the show was set to start at 7pm but instead made to wait in the cold for nearly an hour while a queue formed outside. Out of my Mary Poppins purse came my gloves and if it was going to rain or snow I had a miniature umbrella, some snow shoes and a plough! Just kidding! Let’s just say I was preparing for a little waiting. KOKO London, a very decadent venue with art deco style interior gives the whole place an edgy but glamorous feel to it.

MTV’s Brand New for 2012 line up of artists set to be top for 2012 started off with a very petit Delilah who is described as “the industry's best-kept secret” belted out a few numbers before passing the mic to Michael Kiwanuka. Michael, a North Londoner with Ugandan orgins was playing some folk inspired tunes that left me wondering which part of London he has been residing in because that style of music was totally unexpected. He is very talent with a soulful twang to his lyrics.

After dancing along to Delilah and Michael I was ready for Emeli to bring her game on stage. She came on a few minutes shy of 10 o’clock. Very petit but full of energy. If you haven’t heard of Emeli Sandé, you will definitely be seeing a lot of her as she is set to be one of the up and coming artists for 2012. With 3 top hit singles already under her belt, an album out in February and collaborations with Alicia Keys, Tinchy Stryder, Chipmunk, Professor Green, Cold Play and song writer for many a singer but she is now doing her own thing. About time too! Sandé’s powerful, soulful and energetic stage presence surely was what the doctor ordered on a rather stressful Wednesday work day. Up tempo, melodic and catchy songs mixed with a few slow numbers on the piano just set the balance right for the evening also with a few that rang of Nineties-style beats. Her line up sounded like this is going to be one of those albums you could play back-to-back. I already have a few favourites, especially one called 'Mountains'. Just one of those that makes you drift off...Not to sleep! You just get lost in thoughts. The show was closed with an encore before my friends and I brought our little reunion to an end, but not before planning our next escape for the April bank holiday weekend!

I managed to record a few videos and Pictures of the line-up, check out my FB page or YouTube Channel.
